FAQs

  • A variety of factors lead to your teeth turning yellow. Age, certain medications, and the foods you eat and drink may all be contributors. Beverages like red wine, coffee, and tea can leave surface stains on the enamel of your teeth and turn your teeth yellow. Smoking is also a big contributor to yellowing teeth.

  • Stains on teeth appear when colored molecules stick to the plaque, tartar, and the surface of our teeth. Dental cleanings help remove plaque and tartar, but sometimes the stains still appear in the layer below called the dentin. The whitening solution applied to the teeth combines with oxygen from the air and carbon in the dentin to break apart the staining molecules stuck on the teeth.

  • Teeth whitening may cause sensitivity to the teeth and gums. Some patients experience little to no sensitivity, while other patients may need to limit the strength and time of the whitening solution to avoid sensitivity.

  • Though not a permanent solution, teeth whitening is a very effective treatment for whitening teeth. Results vary from person to person and depending on your personal habits, teeth whitening results can last for years.

  • To ensure the best results, you will want to avoid eating any foods or drinks that can stain teeth for at least 48 hours. This includes coffee, tea, red wine, juices, berries, foods with artificial colors, etc. You should also refrain from smoking as long as possible.

  • Touch-up kits or in-office visits can be used every 6–12 months to enhance and maintain whitening results.
